On April 28 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon/12:00 p.m. the Nevada Police, NuCara Pharmacy and Youth & Shelter Services of Eastern Story County will partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your medications for disposal to Nevada City Hall at 1209 Sixth Street.  The service is free and anonymous.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines left unused in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in theU.S.are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Bring unused and expired over-the-counter and prescription medications to Nevada City Hall on Saturday morning, April 28.

Thanks for supporting this effort to keep our citizens safe!

At-Home Sleeping Device Can Help Detect Sleep Apnea

Do you or a loved one suspect they might be living with Sleep Apnea? According to Kisha Manning, a Respiratory Therapist for NuCara Home Medical a Durable Medical Equipment company based inIowa, sleep apnea is very common, almost as common in adults as diabetes or asthma. NuCara Home Medical currently services 765 patients throughoutIowaand is seeing that number rise each month.

Some patients are hesitant to see their doctor and do a full sleep study to get an official diagnosis. However, there is a test that can be done at home that can indicate whether the patient is a candidate for more testing.

The RUSleeping RTS device is a multi-patient, small, lightweight, battery-operated device with a specially designed cannula for detecting apnea events.

RUSleeping RTS provides the following results to the user:

1. The rate of apnea events (AH) occurring during the sleep period.

2. The total number of apnea events occurring each hour.

RUSleeping RTS is not a diagnostic tool. Rather, it is an assessment tool for collecting and displaying information about sleep related apnea events.

“The RUSleeping RTS is a very easy and quite reliable monitoring device. Because it is a free service we offer, patients don’t have anything to lose,” says Alyssa Barkalow, a Respiratory Therapist for NuCara Home Medical.

If patients fall into a range that indicates an issue, they can then make an appointment with their physician for more testing and an official diagnosis.

“Our goal is to help patients take that first step towards getting help,” says Barkalow. “Many times once they really see what they are dealing with, they realize they have a problem and are more willing to go to the doctor.”

For more information on the RUSleeping RTS device, contact your local physician or NuCara Home Medical at 800-358-3308. NuCara Home Medical is currently holding Sleep Clinics in many of their Iowalocations during the week of February 6th. See your local NuCara Pharmacy for more details.
